Here is a little background on the Steamboats project ...

CW and I both enjoy singing songs about Saskatchewan - so we teamed up for the Ragtime Don and the Word Junkie duo project.

We released the new 'Steamboats on the Saskatchewan' CD at Festiv-ale on Feb. 5 & 6th, 2010 at CONEXUS Arts Centre. Andrew joined us on fiddle, with Trent Mailander on percussion.

Don is an accomplished local flute player, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is the former leader of popular local Celtic Band ‘Crofter’s Revenge’.

Chris is an accomplished singer-songwriter and also a former member of Crofter’s Revenge. He runs CW Stringworks in Moose Jaw and also performs with his wife, Marianne on flute as the ‘Two of Us’.

The intro song, ‘Land of the Free’, honours western pioneers. Don’s accordion adds a Cajun feel. Andrew, the Fiddlin’ Philosopher, adds violin.

‘T. Rex Boogie’ is Chris’s fun take on the whole Eastend dinosaur phenomenon. It features Chris’s rockabilly guitar and accordion, with Trent Mailander on percussion and Don on upright bass. Rick McBain adds harmony vocals.

‘Great March West (300 Men)’ tells the story of the trek west by the NWMP in 11 verses. Trent adds the marching snare, with CW on banjo, while Don recreates a marching band at the end by adding the brass.

Chris, The Word Junkie, delves deep into Saskatchewan history, with the story of ‘Old Wives’ Lake’; He combines spoken word dialog and banjo plaintiveness into a progressive folk song. It also features the fiddle work of Andrew Konoff, with Don on upright bass.

‘Resolution’ is a warped & tragic outlaw tale from the Great Southwest. – It has Andrew’s most inspired fiddling to date, with equally haunting banjo by Chris. Inspired bottle percussion by Trent.

‘Steamboats on the Saskatchewan’, the title track, was inspired by the only mutiny on Saskatchewan water. It’s Don’s’ musical composition project and the only pure ragtime piece on the disc, with Don playing all instruments, including trumpet and flute.

'Badlands' - CW paints a vivid picture of the west with this haunting instrumental masterpiece. You can hear the lonely prairie winds echoed in Don's flute playing.

'Ride the Big Muddy' - More badlands, but this time with Don telling the colourful tale of outlaw Sam Kelly. Classic western guitar sound in Ponderosa style courtesy of Chris and his new Washburn jazz guitar.

'Last of the Buffalo Hunters' – They’re on a western roll here. Lilting flute, tasty fiddling and finger style guitar. The plaintive instrumental jewel of the disc.

'Diggin' Potatoes' - A little autobiography from Don. A rock and roll feel and a chance for Don to have some light-hearted fun.
